FORT MYERS, Fla.- The #5 Florida SouthWestern Buccaneers clinched their sixth consecutive Citrus Conference series win on Saturday at Buccaneers Park in Fort Myers, dropping a 5-3 game one decision to #23 State College of Florida before bouncing back for a 10-0 run rule win in the series finale to end the weekend on a high note.
After 15 runs in the 1st inning between the two in the series opener on Thursday, Saturday's four run 1st seemed subdued, but there was lots of traffic on the bases for both sides with the Manatees taking an early 2-0 lead in the top half before FSW answered with a two spot in the bottom on back to back RBI singles from Cris Walley and Aiden Talarico to tie the game at 2 after one.
Both starting pitchers settled down from there, matching zeroes in the 2nd and 3rd before SCF retook a 4-2 lead in the 4th, taking advantage of a leadoff triple and an FSW error to go back in front by a pair.
The Bucs crept back to within one with a run in the bottom of the 5th as Jonah St. Antoine singled home a run to make it 4-3 but with two outs and nobody on in the Manatee 6th, a hit batter, a stolen base, and a single up the middle got the run back for SCF to put them back up two, 5-3 after 5 ½.
FSW put the tying runs on base in the 6th with one out, but couldn't move the runners from there and brought the tying run to the plate with three shots for the middle of their lineup in their final at bats in the 7th but couldn't get anything going as the Manatees leveled the series at a game a piece with a 5-3 win in game one of the doubleheader.
Bishop Quarles led the Bucs offense with three hits and a pair of runs scored in the loss. Anthony Wilkie was the loser on the mound for FSW, going 4 2/3 innings, allowing eight hits and three earned runs to fall to 6-2 on the year.
#5 FLORIDA SOUTHWESTERN/#23 STATE COLLEGE OF FLORIDA GAME ONE BOX SCORE
The rubber game saw lots of traffic but little execution by the two sides early on.
SCF loaded the bases with nobody out in the top half of the 1st inning just to see FSW starter Parker Burgess work his way out of the jam unscathed to keep the game scoreless after one.
Manatee pitching gifted the Bucs a run in the bottom of the 2nd as a hit batter and three walks loaded the bases and pushed one home without the ball being put in play to give FSW a 1-0 lead at the end of two innings of action.
Burgess worked his magic again in the top of the 3rd, allowing a leadoff double but leaving the runner stranded at inning's end to keep the Bucs in front 1-0.
Each side put runners on in the 4th but couldn't come through with the big knock as despite 13 combined baserunners in the first four innings, just one found his way home as FSW led it 1-0 as the teams went to the 5th.
A single and a pair of free passes once again loaded the bases for the Bucs in the 5th, but this time, they cashed the runners in as Talarico muscled the first pitch he saw over the center field wall for a grand slam to extend the Bucs lead to 5-0. Two batters later Robbie Demetree connected on a solo home run of his own to make it 6-0 and the Bucs weren't done yet as Nick April-Gath cranked his third of the year out to deep left for a three run shot to pad FSW's advantage to 9-0.
The Bucs bullpen worked it's second straight 1-2-3 inning in the top of the 6th and FSW finished things off in the bottom of the frame as Jonah St. Antoine doubled to lead off the inning and later scored on an SCF throwing error to kick in the run rule with the Bucs clinching the series with a 10-0 win in six.
Burgess combined with Sterling Bass and Judd Hildreth for a four hit shutout in the win. Burgess earns the win in his first start of the season, moving to 1-0 on the year. Eight of nine Bucs starters accounted for a run with either one scored on one driven in. Talarico led the way, going 1-3 with the grand slam and a pair of runs scored.
