FORT MYERS, Fla.- The #2 Florida SouthWestern Buccaneers put on a show in front of a standing room only home crowd Wednesday afternoon at Buccaneers Park in Fort Myers, outscoring the visiting Spoon River Snappers 16-1 in a doubleheader sweep to improve to 8-2 on the year.
In game one the Bucs got off to a quick start as Lizzy Kwakernaak struck out the side against the Snappers in the top of the 1st and Noelani Livingstone doubled and scored two batters into the FSW half of the 1st to give the Bucs an early 1-0 lead.
Kwakernaak struck out three more in the 2nd and her offense was right back at it in the bottom half with Livingstone in the middle of the action once again, this time ripping a two run single back up the middle to build the Bucs lead to 3-0.
Giorgiana Woods came on out of the Bucs bullpen to keep it right there through the middle innings as three scoreless frames from her held the 3-0 lead for FSW into the bottom of the 6th.
The Bucs added some insurance in the bottom of the 6th as Thaima Maximiliana singled with one out and stole second before coming home on an RBI single from Megan Veilleux to bump the lead to 4-0. Later in the frame the lineup rolled over for Livingstone with the sacks packed and she took advantage by ripping a bases clearing triple to the gap to blow the game open to 7-0.
With the game in hand, all that was left to decide was whether the Bucs would finish off the shutout and that they did as Maximiliana made a highlight reel play back up the middle for the final out of the game, sealing the 7-0 shutout win for the Bucs.
Livingstone was the offensive star for the Bucs, finishing a perfect 4-4 with 5 RBIs, missing the cycle by just a home run. Kwakernaak earned the win in the circle with three stellar innings of work, allowing just two hits and striking out seven to improve to 1-1 on the year. Woods was sharp in relief, throwing three innings of one hit ball while striking out a pair.
For the second straight game the Bucs jumped on the Snappers right away in game two as this time Woods impacted the game with her bat, smacking a two run single in the bottom of the 1st to give FSW a quick 2-0 lead.
Spoon River scored their lone run of the day in the 3rd as they took advantage of a leadoff walk and a double behind it to crack the scoreboard and make it a 2-1 game, but FSW answered right back with a three spot in the bottom half of the frame thanks to a two out, two run double from Stephanie Basso and a pair of wild pitches to allow her to score to pad their lead back to 5-1.
Bucs reliever Charlotte Graham worked a quick 1-2-3 top of the 4th and the Bucs offense continued to pressure the Snappers in the bottom half of the inning. Woods continued her big game with a two run double to the wall in right and Kaylee Walker and Milla Durnell drove in runs later in the inning to make it a 9-1 game.
The Snappers put a runner on in the 5th in an attempt to lengthen the game, but Graham got back to back strikeouts to bring the inning and the game to a close as FSW secured a 9-1 run rule win in game two to complete the sweep.
Woods finished 3-3 with 4 RBIs to lead the Bucs offense while Graham was the story in the circle, going 2 2/3 and allowing just one hit while striking out five to improve to 2-0 on the year.
The Bucs improve to 8-2 on the year with the sweep while Spoon River falls to 4-5.
FSW is right back in action on Thursday when they host #25 Southern Idaho in doubleheader action beginning at 11:00 AM at Buccaneers Park in Fort Myers.
