Solo Fires Perfect Game as Bucs Sweep Hawks
A pair of Florida SouthWestern freshman dominated the Hillsborough Hawks in the circle on Tuesday afternoon at Buccaneers Park in Fort Myers as Alexandra Solo threw the third perfect game in Bucs history in an 8-0 game one win before Charlotte Graham missed the feat by just an infield single in game two as FSW once again blanked the Hawks 8-0 to finish the sweep.
FORT MYERS, Fla.- A pair of Florida SouthWestern freshman dominated the Hillsborough Hawks in the circle on Tuesday afternoon at Buccaneers Park in Fort Myers as Alexandra Solo threw the third perfect game in Bucs history in an 8-0 game one win before Charlotte Graham missed the feat by just an infield single in game two as FSW once again blanked the Hawks 8-0 to finish the sweep.
The Bucs got going early and often in game one as a bunt single from Kaitlyn Klismith on the first pitch of the bottom of the 1st started a four run inning highlighted by an RBI double to the wall off the bat of Bente Zwanenburg to put FSW up 4-0 on the Hawks after one inning of play.
FSW starter Alexandra Solo struck out her third and fourth consecutive hitters in a 1-2-3 top of the 2nd and the Bucs offense were back at it in the bottom half, getting an RBI single from Kaylee Walker to extend their lead to 5-0.
It was another two strikeout frame from Solo in the top of the 3rd and it was another run scoring frame for FSW in the bottom half as a pair of HCC errors allowed two to come across for the Bucs and make it a 7-0 game.
Solo continued to rack up the strikeouts in the 4th and worked her fifth straight 1-2-3 inning in the top of the 5th to keep the Bucs in front 7-0.
The Bucs put the game away in the 5th as Abbie Shellabarger walked with one out, swiped second and scored on a Hillsborough error, kicking in the run rule with FSW coming away with an 8-0 walk off win, but also securing just the third perfect game in Buccaneer history in the circle for Solo.
It was 15 up, 15 down for Solo in the victory as she needed just 65 total pitches to blank the Hawks, striking out 8 of the 15 hitters she faced along the way.
The Bucs offense had just seven hits, but took advantage of seven Hillsborough errors to score five unearned runs in the win. Klismith led the offense with a 2-4 effort at the top of the lineup, stealing a pair of bases and scoring twice in the victory.
#4 FLORIDA SOUTHWESTERN/HILLSBOROUGH GAME ONE BOX SCORE
In game two, the Bucs sent the last pitcher before Solo to throw a perfect game to the circle in fellow freshman Charlotte Graham.
Hillsborough would quickly make sure they would not have another perfecto thrown against them in game two as a one out infield single in the top of the 1st gave them their first, and only, baserunner of the day.
Once again it didn't take the Bucs to jump on the Hawks early on as Noelani Livingstone and Emma-Rose Payette drove in 1st inning runs for the Purple and Aqua to give FSW a quick 2-0 lead.
Graham punched out a pair in a 1-2-3 top of the 2nd and the Bucs continued to swing it in the bottom of the inning, getting RBI knocks from Mikan Nishiya and Lizzy Kwakernaak to double the Bucs lead to 4-0 at the end of two.
The Bucs doubled their lead for the second straight inning in the 3rd as Senna Grootings singled up the middle to score two and Makayla Jakubuwski smacked a double to the gap to drive home two more to make it 8-0 FSW after three.
It was all Graham from there and she finished the game retiring the final 14 hitters she faced, striking out four of the final six to close things out and give FSW an 8-0 run rule win in five in game two
Graham threw a one hit shutout, improving to 6-1 on the year. She struck out eight and didn't walk a batter, allowing just the 1st inning infield single in the contest.
The Bucs banged out 11 hits, led by Grootings who was 2-3 with a pair of RBIs and Payette who went 2-2 with one run scored and another driven in.
