Bucs Go Toe to Toe With #15 Trinity Valley In Opener, Come Up Just Short
Florida SouthWestern Head Coach Jamie Fisher isn't looking for moral victories for his Buccaneer squad as they face a difficult early season schedule, but if he was, Friday could be chalked up as one, as FSW went toe to toe with #15 Trinity Valley in their season opener in the Walters State Classic Friday afternoon with a furious late game comeback coming up just short in a 72-67 loss to begin the 2024-2025 campaign.
MORRISTOWN, Tenn.- Florida SouthWestern Head Coach Jamie Fisher isn't looking for moral victories for his Buccaneer squad as they face a difficult early season schedule, but if he was, Friday could be chalked up as one, as FSW went toe to toe with #15 Trinity Valley in their season opener in the Walters State Classic Friday afternoon with a furious late game comeback coming up just short in a 72-67 loss to begin the 2024-2025 campaign.
The Bucs got off to a slow start, needing nearly four minutes to put their first points on the board, but they started to find their rhythm, taking their first lead of the game at 12-10 before closing the quarter strong to take a 16-14 lead at the end of one.
FSW held their momentum into the second as Asiana Britt nailed a wing three to put them up 23-18 two minutes into the period, but Trinity Valley stepped on the gas from there, putting up 24 points over the next eight minutes to erase the Bucs lead and take a 42-32 into the half.
The Bucs regained their footing to start the second half, playing the Cards even until a late three gave Trinity Valley a 60-46 lead at the end of three.
FSW looked like they were in trouble as their deficit grew to 18 early in the fourth quarter, but they mounted a furious late game comeback, trimming the Trinity Valley lead all the way down to four late at 71-67 before a late Cardinal free throw put it in the books as the Bucs valiant comeback came up just short, falling 72-67.
It was a balanced scoring effort for the Bucs as seven different players scored five or more points. Samantha Serrano led FSW with 13 in her Buccaneer debut while Sarah Owona added 12 for the Bucs.
The Bucs will be back in action tomorrow afternoon when they take on the host Walters State in a 2 PM start from Morristown.
