Cardiac Kids Win Another Close One
Florida SouthWestern Head Coach Jamie Fisher's beard is looking a little lighter these days, and might just have something to do with the fact that his team has played four straight games decided by four points or less over the past two weeks. As was the case once again on Wednesday as his Bucs watched a 12 point fourth quarter lead disappear just to see them regroup for a 58-54 win, their third straight victory, the three by a combined 10 points.
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla.- Florida SouthWestern Head Coach Jamie Fisher's beard is looking a little lighter these days, and might just have something to do with the fact that his team has played four straight games decided by four points or less over the past two weeks. As was the case once again on Wednesday as his Bucs watched a 12 point fourth quarter lead disappear just to see them regroup for a 58-54 win, their third straight victory, the three by a combined 10 points.
The Bucs got off to a bit of a slow start, while St. Petersburg was hitting early on on their home floor as FSW found themselves down 17-11 midway through the first quarter. The Bucs finished the period on a flurry though, getting the final nine points of the quarter to take the lead back and head to the second on top 20-17.
Points were at a premium in the second quarter as both teams struggled to find any rhythm in a physical battle in the painted area. The Bucs did enough to extend their lead by a pair, taking a 32-27 advantage into the locker rooms at the half.
Things didn't get any prettier as the second half got underway as the two teams combined for just six field goals and 19 total points, thankfully for FSW 12 of the 19 went their way as they extended their lead to 44-34 at the end of three.
The Bucs looked like they were going to cruise to victory as they extended their lead to 12 early in the fourth, but they went ice cold from there as St. Pete slowly cut into the FSW lead, eventually tying the game at 52 with 1:30 to go. That's when the Bucs went to their secret weapon, Amelia Williams who got a bucket to put them back ahead and they never looked back, finishing off the Titans 58-54 for their third straight nailbiting victory.
Williams led the Bucs with 15 points off the bench marking her third consecutive double figure scoring effort as a reserve.
The Bucs win their third straight to improve to 16-8 overall and 9-3 in Citrus Conference play where they are now just a half game out of the top spot in the conference standings. St. Petersburg falls to 5-18 overall and 2-9 in league play in the defeat.
The Bucs will have a week off before heading back to the Bay next Wednesday when they take on Hillsborough in the two teams final matchup as Citrus Conference foes.
