Bucs Sweep Week Five FCSAA Awards
For the second time this season, the Florida SouthWestern Buccaneers have swept the weekly FCSAA Volleyball awards. Sara Gamboa was named the Player of the Week, Irina Makinen picked up another Setter of the Week nod, and Aleksandra Lucic earned her second Defensive Player of the Week selection.
TALLAHASSEE, Fla.- For the second time this season, the Florida SouthWestern Buccaneers have swept the weekly FCSAA Volleyball awards. Sara Gamboa was named the Player of the Week, Irina Makinen picked up another Setter of the Week nod, and Aleksandra Lucic earned her second Defensive Player of the Week selection.
Gamboa earns her second Player of the Week honor after averaging 3.9 kills per set and hitting .407 in a pair of Buccaneer wins. Wednesday against Polk State she dominated in a 3-0 FSW sweep, hammering home 13 kills on just 16 swings, hitting a season high .750 for the Bucs. Saturday in a marathon five set win over #16 Eastern Florida she racked up 18 kills and also had 8 digs for the Bucs against the Titans. She currently ranks 5th in the NJCAA Division I ranks averaging 3.83 kills per set on the season
Makinen was named the FCSAA Setter of the Week for the third time this season, dishing out 9.9 assists per set in two Bucs wins. Wednesday in a 3-0 win over Polk State she collected 29 assists and helped the Bucs hit .507 as a team against the Eagles. Saturday she recorded her first career 50 assist match in a 3-2 victory on the road against #16 Eastern Florida. Through the halfway point of the season, Makinen ranks 4th in the country averaging 9.4 assists per set while quarterbacking the Bucs to the top team hitting percentage in the country at .301.
Lucic picked up Defensive Player of the Week honors for the second time this season for the Bucs. She averaged 1.1 blocks per set, picking up 2 in two sets played against Polk State Wednesday and getting in on 6 in FSW's five set win over #16 Eastern Florida on Saturday. She currently ranks 9th in the NJCAA with 1.30 blocks per set on the season while leading the country with a .494 hitting percentage.
The Bucs Player of the Week trio is back in action on Wednesday in a huge regular season matchup on the road at #2 Miami Dade in a National Championship Game rematch from the past three seasons. It marks the sixth time in the past three seasons that the two will meet as the #1 and #2 teams in the country.
