Program Record Three Bucs Earn NJCAA All-American Honors
For the first time in program history, the Florida SouthWestern Buccaneers had three players named to the NJCAA All-American teams on Tuesday as Irina Makinen led the way with 1st Team All-American honors, Sara Gamboa was named a 2nd Teamer for the second straight season, while newcomer Aleksandra Lucic was a 3rd Team selection.
CHARLOTTE, N.C.- For the first time in program history, the Florida SouthWestern Buccaneers had three players named to the NJCAA All-American teams on Tuesday as Irina Makinen led the way with 1st Team All-American honors, Sara Gamboa was named a 2nd Teamer for the second straight season, while newcomer Aleksandra Lucic was a 3rd Team selection.
Makinen became the ninth 1st Team All-American in program history and just the second Bucs setter to pick up a 1st Team nod. She finished 3rd in the NJCAA Division I ranks with 10.49 assists per set this season for the Bucs and set a new program single season record with 1,143 assists this season. She had 14 games of 40 or more assists and 5 of 50 or more including three straight in Citrus Conference play and back to back 50 assist efforts at the NJCAA National Tournament to help her earn a spot on the All-Tournament Team.
Gamboa earns 2nd Team All-American accolades for the second straight season after also picking up a 2nd Team selection last season at Trinity Valley. She finished 6th in the NJCAA Division I ranks with 3.85 kills per set this season while being one of just two players in the top 10 in the country in kills to hit over .250 on the year. She had 15 or more kills 11 different times this season including three straight at the NJCAA national Tournament where she earned All-Tournament Team honors.
Lucic is the first FSW player to pick up 3rd Team All-American honors after putting up a big year in her lone season in the Purple and Aqua. She finished 3rd in the country with a .397 hitting percentage while also finishing 3rd in the FCSAA with 1.14 blocks per set. She had four matches with double digit kills this season and had 12 matches with 5 or more blocks on the year.
It marks the sixth straight year FSW has had multiple NJCAA All-Americans on the hardwood while the three selections are a program first.
