Sharpshooting Bucs Soar Past Eagles
The #22 Florida SouthWestern Buccaneers nailed 15 threes and five players scored in double figures as they flew past the visiting Polk State Eagles 92-65 for their seventh straight Citrus Conference victory Saturday afternoon in Suncoast Credit Union Arena in Fort Myers.
FORT MYERS, Fla.- The #22 Florida SouthWestern Buccaneers nailed 15 threes and five players scored in double figures as they flew past the visiting Polk State Eagles 92-65 for their seventh straight Citrus Conference victory Saturday afternoon in Suncoast Credit Union Arena in Fort Myers.
Early on it was the Bucs defense that staked them out to an advantage as they held Polk to just four points over the first seven minutes of the contest to get out to a 13-4 lead. Polk worked their way back into the game, drawing to within two at 18-16 with 9:16 to go in the half, but it was all FSW from there. Kenyon Giles popped back to back threes to quickly stretch the lead back to eight and an offensive rebound and putback from Stephen Okoro made it 30-18 FSW. Moments later seven straight from Mason Blazer opened the Bucs lead to 19 and FSW went to the half with all the momentum, leading the Eagles 48-25.
The game was never close in the second as Giles continued his big game with a pair of triples and an old fashioned three point play from Okoro down low thrilled the participants in the nine year old birthday party going on in Suncoast Arena as FSW took a 67-41 lead on the Eagles. Tyler Bey cashed a three of his own and then was pure on a turnaround to push the Bucs lead to 30 and the Bucs bench took it from there, finishing off a 92-65 victory to stretch FSW's win streak to seven.
The Bucs shot a scorching 50% from the three point line with 15 threes made and actually only shot 42% from inside the arc. Giles led the way with 25 including 6-10 from distance while Bey and Okoro both posted double-doubles for the Bucs in the winning effort.
FSW wins their seventh in a row to improve to 19-5 overall and 9-1 in Citrus Conference play where they sit alone atop the league standings with six games to go. Polk's forgettable season continues as the Eagles lose their 17th in a row to fall to 4-19 overall and remain winless at 0-10 in league play.
The Bucs will hit the road for their next two games, first making the trip up I-75 to Tampa to take on Hillsborough Wednesday before traversing the state to battle Eastern Florida Saturday in a big one in Titan Fieldhouse.
