TAMPA, Fla.- To rise to the top spot in the Citrus Conference standings, the #21 Florida SouthWestern Buccaneers have been lighting up the scoreboard for over 90 points per night during their seven game win streak. Wednesday night they turned to their defense who stymied the Hillsborough Hawks to the tune of just 51 points as they gutted out a 63-51 victory to top the 20 win mark for the eighth time in the 10 years of program history.
The Bucs set the tone early that points were going to be tough for the Hawks to come by on this night as they held Hillsborough to just 10 points over the first 10 minutes of the ballgame as they jumped out to a 23-10 lead. Both sides struggled offensively to close the half as the Bucs and Hawks combined for just 22 points in the final 10 minutes of the period to go to the half with FSW leading it 34-21.
The teams played even to begin the second half as the Bucs continued to remain well out in front of the Hawks, 46-33 as the clock ticked under 10 minutes to go. The Hawks got to within seven once, but never any closer as the Bucs finished off a 63-51 victory to avenge their only loss of Citrus Conference play this season.
Mason Blazer led the Bucs with 21 points while Kenyon Giles and Stephen Okoro had 12 apiece. No other stats were available at time of release.
The Bucs win their eighth straight to reach the 20 win mark for the eighth time in 10 seasons as a program. FSW is now 20-5 overall and 10-1, continuing to sit atop the Citrus Conference standings one game in front of Daytona State. The loss is a big one for the Hawks who drop to 11-12 overall and 3-7 in league play where they now sit two games out of the final playoff spot from the conference.
The Bucs are back in action on Saturday on the road in Melbourne in a big one against Eastern Florida State set to tip off at 4 PM from the Space Coast.
