FORT MYERS, Fla.- The #2 Florida SouthWestern Buccaneers swept an NJCAA Top 25 battle against the #25 Southern Idaho Golden Eagles on Thursday at Buccaneers Park in Fort Myers, pitching an 8-0 shutout in game one of the doubleheader before taking it to CSI again in game two 9-3 to improve to 10-2 on the year.
The Bucs got on the board first in game one as starter Zoe Yzaguirre struck out five CSI hitters through the first two frames and her offense rewarded her as Senna Grootings lifted a deep fly ball to the wall in left center and scored not one, but two on a sacrifice fly to give FSW a quick 2-0 lead.
FSW was back at it in the 3rd as Thaima Maximiliana and Kaitlyn Klismith singled to begin the inning before Noelani Livingstone continued to swing her red hot bat with a three run shot over the wall in right center to make it 5-0 Bucs. They weren't done yet as one batter later Giorgiana Woods made it back to back, cranking her second of the year deep and out to left to bump the Bucs lead to 6-0.
Yzaguirre finished her stellar outing with her eighth strikeout of the game in a 1-2-3 top of the 4th to keep the shutout intact at 6-0.
The Bucs put the game in the books in the 5th as Klismith led off the inning with a double and scored on a line drive single back up the middle from Livingstone to make it 7-0. One batter later Emma-Rose Payette picked a good time for her first career hit, stroking a single to the gap in right center to drive home a run and kick in the run rule with FSW winning it 8-0 in five.
Livingstone finished 2-3 with a homer and 4 RBIs in the win while Klismith was 2-3 with a pair of runs scored at the top of the lineup. In the circle, Yzaguirre and Alexandra Solo combined for a two hit shutout, Yzaguirre earning her fourth win of the year with four innings of work, striking out eight.
For the second straight game, the Bucs jumped on the Golden Eagles early in game two, getting RBI singles from Lizzy Kwakernaak and Milla Durnell in the top of the 1st before taking advantage of a CSI error to score two more and make it 4-0 at the end of one.
CSI scored their first runs of the day in the 3rd as they took advantage of three FSW walks to score three times and get back into the game at 4-3.
The Golden Eagles defense cost them again in the bottom of the inning as the Bucs got a run back on CSI's third error of the game before Durnell singled back up the middle to drive home another run to pad their lead to 6-3.
Things settled down in the 4th and 5th as neither team was able to cash in runners and in the 6th CSI gifted the Bucs three insurance runs without a hit as a wild pitch and two passed balls cleared the loaded bases to make it 9-3 FSW.
Charlotte Graham came in out of the Bucs bullpen in the 7th and finished things off as FSW completed the doubleheader sweep with a 9-3 victory.
The Bucs banged out 11 hits in the win with Durnell leading the way with a 2-3 effort with a pair of RBIs. Kwakernaak earned the win in the circle, going four innings and racking up seven strikeouts to improve to 2-1 on the year while Woods and Graham combined for three scoreless out of the FSW bullpen.
The Bucs improve to 10-2 on the year with the sweep while CSI falls to 2-4 on the early season.
FSW will be back in action on Friday as the Paradise Cove Classic continues with a venue shift over to Lee Health Sports Complex. The Bucs will match up in their lone game of the day at 3:30 with the Salt Lake Bruins.
