FORT MYERS, Fla.- The #5 Florida SouthWestern Buccaneers swept a Citrus Conference doubleheader with the visiting Miami Dade Sharks on Tuesday afternoon at Buccaneers Park in Fort Myers, using an outstanding pitching effort in game one from Zoe Yzaguirre for a 3-1 win before busting out the bats in game two for a 10-2 run rule victory in five to complete the sweep.
FSW jumped ahead right away in game one as the Bucs on base machine Noelani Livingstone walked to lead off the FSW 1st , moved to second on a sacrifice bunt, and scored on a Miami Dade error to give the Bucs a quick 1-0 lead.
Bucs starter Zoe Yzaguirre kept the game right there, mowing through the Shark lineup in order in the 2nd and 3rd before pitching around a leadoff triple in the 4th with a pair of strikeouts to keep FSW in front 1-0 into the 5th.
The Bucs added to their lead in the 5th, taking advantage of a Shark error that gave them an extra out in the inning and cashed it into two runs as Livingstone shot a double down the left field line to plate a pair and make it 3-0 after five.
The FSW defense gave a run back in the 6th, committing an error on a Miami Dade bunt ahead of a Shark RBI double to cut the lead to 3-1.
The Bucs couldn't add any insurance in the 6th but they didn't need it as Yzaguirre finished what she started in the 7th, working a 1-2-3 frame to close things out and give FSW a 3-1 win in the opener.
The game featured just seven total hits, three for FSW and four for Miami Dade. Livingstone accounted for all three Bucs runs in the game, scoring one and driving in the other two. Yzaguirre was lights out in the circle, allowing just four hits and one unearned run in a complete game victory, striking out nine without walking a batter to improve to 7-1 on the year.
For the second straight game, the Bucs jumped ahead 1-0 in the 1st and also once again they were helped by a Miami Dade error to take the early lead.
Bucs starter Alexandra Solo posted goose eggs through three and her offense opened things up in the bottom half of the 3rd for her.
FSW finally broke out with a crooked number, putting up seven runs in the 3rd, highlighted by an RBI double from Bente Zwanenburg and a two run triple from Mikan Nishiya to blow the game open to 8-0 at the end of three.
Miami Dade fought off the run rule with a pair of runs in the top of the 5th , but they couldn't escape it in the bottom half of the frame as Stephanie Basso launched a solo home run to begin the FSW 5th and Abbie Shellabarger drove home the game clincher with an infield single to give the Bucs game two 10-2 in five.
The Bucs banged out 12 hits in the win with Kaityn Klismith leading the way, going 3-4 at the top of the lineup with a pair of runs scored while Zwanenburg and Nishiya had two hits and two RBIs each for FSW. Solo earned the win in the circle for the Bucs, going 3 1/3 scoreless, allowing just two hits to improve to 2-0 on the year.
FSW moves to 17-3 on the year with the sweep and bumps their Citrus Conference record to 3-1 while Miami Dade falls to 8-5 overall and 0-2 in league play.
The Bucs are back in action this weekend in Ocala when they make the trip North to take on Central Forida Saturday at 1:00 & 3:00 PM.
