MIAMI, Fla.- After splitting their previous four doubleheaders, the #2 Florida SouthWestern State Buccaneers came out with a purpose on Tuesday afternoon in Miami, sweeping a key Citrus Conference doubleheader with the #8 Miami Dade Sharks by scores of 7-1 and 10-1 to push over the 40 win mark on the year.
Miami Dade jumped in front early in game one of the doubleheader, pushing across a 1st inning run on a sacrifice fly to take an early 1-0 lead.
It remained a 1-0 game all the way to the 5th when the Bucs offense finally came alive. After two quick outs to start the inning Noelani Livingstone singled and stole second before trotting home on a two run home run from Skylar Brennan to give FSW the lead 2-1.
The Sharks threatened to take the lead back in the 6th as they loaded the bases with one out, but a ground ball against a drawn in infield turned into an out at the plate and a one hopper back to pitcher Leah Meyer ended the threat as FSW clung to a 2-1 lead after six.
The Bucs added some insurance in the 7th , taking advantage of a Miami Dade error ahead of an RBI double from Virginia Mambelli to make it 3-1 and Nicole Edmiaston singled back up the middle to knock home a pair and give them some breathing room at 5-1. One batter later Emily Allegood put the exclamation point on the big inning, crushing a ball out to left to cap a five run frame for the Bucs to make it a 7-1 game.
Meyer closed things out from there, working around a leadoff walk in the bottom of the 7th to put up a zero and finish off a 7-1 win for FSW.
The Bucs outhit the Sharks 10-3 in the win with Livingstone leading the way with a three hit game at the top of the order and Brennan going 2-4 with a double, a homer, two RBIs and two runs scored in the two hole. Meyer went the distance in the circle, improving to 15-1 on the year by allowing just three hits and one run in the win.
The Bucs didn't wait around in game two, scoring twice in the top of the 1st on a Miami Dade passed ball and an RBI single from Virginia Mambelli to take a quick 2-0 lead.
Miami Dade got a run back in the 2nd but FSW immediately answered in the 3rd, taking advantage of a pair of Shark errors to extend the inning and score five times, highlighted by a two run single from Faith Wharton to blow things open to 7-1.
The Bucs continued to put pressure on the Sharks in the 4th as Makayla Jakubuwski knocked in a run ahead of a two run double from Wharton to make it 10-1 FSW.
Lizzy Kwakernaak worked a 1-2-3 bottom of the 4th in the circle for the Bucs and McKenzie Bailey-McDowell came in and followed suit in the 5th to close things out and give FSW a 10-1 run rule win in five.
The Bucs banged out 12 hits in the win with Wharton going a perfect 3-3 with two doubles and four RBIs. Livingstone and Mambelli both went 2-3 and scored a run while Karolina Dvorakova accounted for three runs with two scored and another driven in. Kwakernaak earned her 10th win of the season in the circle, going four strong innings, allowing just four hits and one run while striking out four.
FSW topps the 40 win mark on the season with the sweep as they improve to 41-5 overall and 27-5 in Citrus Conference action. The wins are the 12th and 13th of the season for the Bucs against a Top 10 ranked opponent. Miami Dade falls back to 29-13 overall and 19-13 in conference play at day's end.
The Bucs return home on Thursday to tangle with long time FCSAA rival Central Florida with first pitch at Buccaneers Park in Fort Myers scheduled for 2 PM.
