Bench Powers Bucs to Road Win
The Florida SouthWestern Buccaneers got 38 points off of their bench Friday night, paving the way to a 69-64 win over the South Georgia Tech Lady Jets on the opening day of the Pete Arrington Thanksgiving Classic in Americus, Georgia.
AMERICUS, Ga.- The Florida SouthWestern Buccaneers got 38 points off of their bench Friday night, paving the way to a 69-64 win over the South Georgia Tech Lady Jets on the opening day of the Pete Arrington Thanksgiving Classic in Americus, Georgia.
The Bucs came out firing early on, getting threes from Elina Briede, Rannon Suttle and Chelsea Bishop in the first quarter to get FSW out to a 19-11 lead after one against South Georgia Tech.
It was more of the same in the second as FSW conitnued to pack on the points against the Lady Jets, pushing their lead up and over the 20 point mark before taking a 43-25 lead into the break at half.
The Bucs three leading scorers in the half all came off the bench as Damia Worthy led the way with 10 while Suttle and Bishop combined for 15 for the Purple and Aqua.
The Lady Jets turned up the heat on the Bucs in the second half and FSW struggled to take care of the ball, managing just five field goals in the third quarter as South Georgia Tech trimmed their lead to 56-45 as the teams went to the fourth.
After turning the ball over just five times in the first 20 minutes, the Bucs piled the turnovers up late allowing the Lady Jets to work their way back into the game. South Georgia Tech trimmed the lead to single digits and then made it a two possession game late, but they ran out of time as FSW hung on to win it 69-65.
The Bucs shot 51% from the field and 48% from the three point line in the win but suffered from 23 turnovers on the night, 18 of which coming in the second half.
All three players that came off the FSW bench scored in double figures as Bishop led the way with 18 while Worthy and Suttle each had 10. Destinie Gordon was the lone Bucs starter to score in double figures as she finished with 12 points while also piling up 7 rebounds and a team best 6 assists in the win.
FSW improves to 5-3 on the year with the win while South Georgia Tech's struggles continue after a National Tournament appearance last season as they fall to 2-5.
The Bucs are back in action Saturday afternoon at 5:00 as they take on Central Georgia Tech.
